HENRY CHANG

Welcome to the captivating world of Henry Chang, where art, science, music, and engineering coalesce into a unique blend of creativity.

Deeply rooted in his work is a passion for exploring the unconventional and the striking. This passion is evident in his art, custom cars, and his enduring band, Soul in the Machine.

Henry Chang, of Chinese descent, was born and raised in Laramie, Wyoming. Despite cultural expectations encouraging more traditional career paths, Henry pursued his interest in art and design. His early years were marked by a quiet dedication to his craft, which would later blossom into his diverse body of work.

His academic journey led him to the University of California San Diego, where he studied computer science and political science. It was during this time that he began designing and building homes. He incorporated design elements such as stainless steel tubes into his architecture, discovering their ability to reflect ambient colors and create a floating illusion. These early explorations laid the groundwork for his innovative work to come.

Henry's artistic journey took a significant turn when he became part of Burning Man. The festival's principle of radical inclusion, coupled with the space it offered for creative freedom, allowed Henry to fully immerse himself in creating art that moves—both in the form of kinetic sculptures and through its emotional resonance.

But his artistic endeavors started well before his time at Burning Man. Henry was a musician with his band, Soul in the Machine, which was established in 1999. The band, known for its unique performances and handcrafted instruments, continues to captivate audiences today, presenting a blend of sound and light that makes for truly memorable experiences.

One of Henry's most renowned creations is his collection of art cars. These vehicles, ranging from the Valerian Steel and Mr. Fusion to the Flux Capacitor, are embodiments of his belief that a vehicle can indeed be a work of art. All powered by V8 engines, these art cars stand as testaments to his love for stainless steel tubing and meticulous craftsmanship.

Henry Chang's work is a powerful testament to the possibilities that emerge when we refuse to confine ourselves within traditional boundaries. His creations inspire engineers, fabricators, and mechanics to reconsider their relationship with art and to appreciate the interdisciplinary nature of creativity.

Whether you're here to admire his art, interested in owning a custom car, or looking to book Soul in the Machine for a performance, you've come to the right place. Here, in the world of Henry Chang, you'll find an intriguing blend of art, engineering, and music that pushes the boundaries of the conventional. Welcome, and enjoy the journey.
